Kinder Critters Teacher Overview
Activity 1
Teacher will read the story called A Chair For My Mother, by Vera B. Williams. Then discuss with the students the different things that the family in the story needed and what they wanted. Lesson Plan ideas...A...B...C... Students will then complete the Wants and Needs Picture Sort (PDF) or Word Document Download.
Activity 2
The students will view a VIDEO to review the difference between living and non-living things. They will then complete a Living and Non-Living T-Chart (PDF) or (Word Document Download).
Activity 3
The students will then go on a scavenger hunt and look for things from a Scavenger Hunt List (PDF) or (Word). Once these items are found they will cut out their items from their Scavenger Hunt list and sort them on a Sorting Sheet (PDF) or (Word). They will then complete a pictograph from their sorting by gluing the objects in the correct spots on their Pictograph Worksheet (PDF) or (Word).
Activity 4
The class will be put in groups to view a POWERPOINT about the needs of living things and then share with their neighbors the 4 things that all living things need to survive. They will then synergize in their group and create a visual display showing the 4 things (use construction paper).
Activity 5
The students(whole group) will watch a video about pet turtles and then use good describing words to compare and contrast a real turtle with a stuffed turtle by using a Venn Diagram (PDF) or (Word). Also could use a Baby Chick Venn Diagram (PDF) or (Word) without a video to support this activity.
Activity 6
The students will reflect on new things learned and then complete a T-Chart Reflection Sheet (PDF) or (Word) and the Living and Non-Living Booklet (PDF) for assessment purposes.
Activity 7
The students will wrap of the rich performance task by creating a Kinder Critter within a diorama involving a selected pet that will be made out of clay. They will then present this diorama in the form of an oral presentation describing their pet and the living things it needs in order to survive.
